A Brief History of Community School

Community School is a public school which serves grades 7-12.  The school originally was built in 1925 to accommodate those children who finished the eighth grade at the ten elementary schools in the area – Rover, Haynes, Longview, Green Hill, Taylor’s Cross Roads, Cedar Grove, Unionville, Fall’s Creek, Poplin’s Cross Roads, and Ray’s Chapel.  A brick building was constructed in 1939, with additions in 1946, 1954, 1955, 1964, and 1975.

The current Community School opened in the fall of 1997.  The school includes a 325 seat auditorium, a 1520 seat gymnasium, a shop with adjoining classroom, a computer lab with adjoining classroom, a consumer science room containing three complete kitchens, a music room, an art room, four science labs, and 17 regular classrooms.  Community School shares a cafeteria with Community Elementary but are otherwise separate schools.

Due to overcrowding, portable classrooms have been added since the 1997 construction.  Our school board and county commission have recognized the need for another school facility in the Unionville area.  A new Community High School located on Unionville-Deason Road serving grades 9-12 is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2009 with plans to reconfigure the current building as a middle school in an effort to relieve overcrowding at Community Elementary.
