Harris Middle School Dress Code
The majority of our students need no advice on their dress or
appearance because they use common sense. However, it is
occasionally necessary to notify students that their clothing or
appearance is causing a disturbance or is a distraction to
teachers and other students in the school. Decency, good taste,
and the normal standards of the community are to be maintained in
dress and grooming by all students. Any dress, hair style or
color that is considered contrary to good hygiene, distractive,
or disruptive in appearance, or detrimental to the educational
environment or the public image of the school will not be
permitted. More specifically:
- Coats, jackets, or heavy overclothing will not be worn
after students enter the building for the school day.
They are kept in assigned areas or students' lockers.
- Book bags will not be allowed in any classroom during the
school day. They are to be kept in lockers at all times
during the regular day.
- Student dress shall not lead school officials to believe
that such behavior, apparel, activities, acts, or other
attributes are gang related or would disrupt or interfere
with the school environment or activity and/or
educational objectives.
- Shirts with sexual, immoral, profane, drug, tobacco or
alcohol related or suggestive imprints may not be worn at
school.
- Sagging of pants is not allowed. Violators will be
subject to suspension from school.
- Students must wear some type of shoes.
- See-through outfits, bare midriffs, tube tops, halters,
and open backs are not allowed. Midriffs must not show
when arms are raised. Students must wear sleeves in all
clothing. Holes in clothing are not permitted.
- Hats, scarves, hair picks, stocking caps, hair curlers,
and other head coverings may not be worn. Hair styling
preparation such as wearing rollers or braiding the hair
in class is not permitted.
- Shorts may be worn as long as they are a decent length.
This length will be determined by the student standing in
a normal position with arms relaxed at sides. Shorts must
not be shorter than the first knuckle of the longest
finger. Skirt lengths must be 1 inch beyond short length.
- No student may wear spandex clothing, tank tops, or mesh
shirts.
- Sunglasses are not to be worn inside the building except
when prescribed by a doctor.
- All belts, buttons on pants, and fasteners must be
fastened at all times.
- A student in violation of the above rules will call a
parent for appropriate clothing or will be sent home to
change. The student will be given an unexcused tardy
and/or absence from class.
When a student is attired in a manner which is likely to cause
disruption or interference with the operation of the school, the
principal shall administer appropriate punishment, which may
include suspension and/or expulsion.
