Analyzing and Describing Music

(Grade Focus 6-8)

Objectives:

1. Recognize texture in selected musical examples as melody alone, melody with accompaniment, or two or more independent melodies.

2. Visually and aurally recognize AB and ABA form, introductions, interludes, codas, and phrases that are the same, different, or similar.

3. Develop skill in moving and listening to musical examples from various world cultures and time periods and describe these in terms of the elements of music.

4. Aurally recognize the moods and stories conveyed by the design of selected examples of program music and describe them in terms of expressive qualities.

5. Aurally recognize and discuss selected examples of electronic music.

6. Develop criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of music performances, compositions, and apply the criteria in their personal listening and performing.

7. Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their own and others' performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations by applying specific criteria for the style of the music and offer constructive suggestions for improvement.

Activities and Procedures:

1. TSW(The student will) examine elements of musical examples.

2. TSW listen to various samples of music.

3. TSW discuss visual images suggested by the selections.

4. TSW listen to a popular song.

5. TSW write suggested images about the the audio selection.

6. TSW watch the accompanying video of the popular song to see if any of their suggestions were used in the production.

7. TSW listen to Debussy's Claire de Lune.

8. TSW list visual images suggested by the selection.

9. TSW write a script for a music video based on their analysis of Claire de Lune.

10. TSW orally describe the music video ideas and submit written scripted ideas to the instructor for evaluation.

11. The instructor will evaluate the scripts for evidence of analytical, descriptive, and evaluative musical skills.
