Unit: Lyrical Lessons Grade: 6-8 Time Limits: 2 weeks Goal and Objectives: This unit is a
fun, motivational unit to be used with 5-8 graders. It
focuses on the more lyrical and figurative aspect in our
language. It is designed to enhance the students value
and appreciation of poetry. This unit provides the
learner many chances to write frequently for a variety of
purposes. Poetry is a genre that can be used to teach
vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, figurative
language, comprehension, and prediction skills. In this
unit, students will be exposed to many types of poetry
and asked to interpret the meaning of each. Students will
also be given the opportunity to write their own poetry.
This will give students an opportunity to express their
feelings and to observe and think through the feelings of
others. All of these objectives are in line with the TN state objectives and content standards of our curriculum
framework for reading and writing. Any teacher can adapt
the poetry lessons to an individual class focusing on a
topic or topics of choice. I chose to spend 2 weeks on
this unit, but it would be possible to spend 4 weeks. 6-8 Writing
Content Standard: Procedure: Day 1-10 I will be using lesson plans pulled from this unit daily that will culminate in the final creation of individual, original poetry booklet. Students will write various kinds of poems actually using their new knowledge of each poetry technique. These poems will be placed in booklet form. Upon conclusion of this unit, students will share their booklets with the class. Students will each have the opportunity to read their favorite original poem from their booklet. The booklets will be graded using the rubric below for evaluation. |
