Subject and Grade Level:  Math, First Grade

 

Skill Number and Name:  TLW name and identify coins, penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, and their values.

                       

Materials:  small ziplock bag, penny, nickel, dime, and quarter (real or cutouts)

 

Procedure:

 

1)         Give each student a small ziplock bag to use as their bank. Each bag should contain 10 pennies, 10 nickels, 10 dimes, and 5 quarters.

 

2)         Tell each student to empty their bank onto their desk. They should then sort the coins into groups according to the kind of coin. Count each group to verify the student has the correct number of each kind of coin.

 

3)         Tell students to indicate the correct group of coins to demonstrate coin recognition.

 

4)         Ask students to state the value of each kind of coin.

 

5)         After the lesson, tell students to return the coins to their bank to be placed in their vault (their school supply box) for safe keeping until the next lesson.
