3401                         World History                                       Recommended for 12th grade or honors 10th grade

World History is a comprehensive study of the leading civilizations of the world from prehistoric man to the present.  Emphasis is placed upon European history. Some outside reading is required.

 

3405                         U.S. History                                            11th grade, required for graduation

U.S. History covers the development of the American Nation from Reconstruction to the present.   Students will study the culture, economics, geography, governance, history, and interactions of groups and individuals from the 1870’s through the 1990’s.

 

3407                         U.S. Government                                 Required for graduation; 12th grade

U.S. Government is a one-semester course focusing on the structure of and participation in the American political process. Emphasis is placed on the federal level of government.

 

3410                         World Geography                                No Prerequisites; recommended for 9th or 10th graders

World Geography provides students with an overview of physical and cultural geography. It explains the inter-relationships between people' cultures and their governments. Units 1 and 2 introduce the students to the study of geography. The remainder of the course covers each continent in detail. Upon completion of this course, students should be familiar with the various land and water forms that make up the face of the earth. Students should have a thorough knowledge of the countries, cultures, political systems, and people that inhabit the earth.

 

3431                         Economics                                               Required for graduation; 12th grade

Economics is the study of how we can most effectively use our limited resources. Curriculum content includes the study of various economic systems, our role as citizens, consumers, and producers in our free enterprise economy. Special emphasis is placed on the forces of supply and demand along with its impact upon our economy. This course is a comprehensive program that addresses such areas as personal finance, globalization and world markets, and employment exploration.

 

3433                         Psychology                                              Elective; recommended for 11th and 12th grades

Psychology deals with human development from early childhood through old age. Topics of study include motivation, emotion, personality, testing, social psychology, abnormal psychology, physiological processes, sensation and perception, learning, remembering, and language and communication.

 

3440                        U.S. History AP   11th grade; placement is based upon recommendation of English teachers and guidance and is limited to students who have demonstrated ability to succeed in a stringent environment

U.S. History AP is a college-level course which traces America's past from pre-discovery to post-World War II in an in-depth manner. Students earn high school credit and may earn college credit by taking the Advanced Placement Examination. Discussion/essay format testing is used as well as extensive outside reading, historical and analytical essays, research assignments and debate-style discussions. Critical and analy1ical thinking are an imperative aspect of the course. Students are expected to take the College Board AP exam in May.

 

3442                         African American History               Semester class; 10th, 11th, 12th grades

African American History is a course that focuses primarily on African American heritage, culture, and achievements that African Americans have made in American history. Specific emphasis will be given to significant time periods in American history, outstanding black personalities, and a study of biographies encompassing these prominent personalities. The course curriculum is designed to facilitate an appreciation for the courage to meet adversity and for the accomplishments achieved.

 

9395                         Success Skills through Service Learning     Approval of instructor required

This class is an academic elective based on the philosophy that leadership and service talent can be developed and trained.  Emphasis is placed on planning, organizing, and conducting school activities and service projects, with the class serving as a practical working laboratory.  Students will use the knowledge, abilities, and skills developed in the class.
