SCHOOL: Shelbyville Central High School is a public four-year high school in Bedford County, Tennessee. The school opened in its present facility in 1977 but traces its existence to 1924. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has continually accredited SCHS since 1949. Current enrollment is 1,075 students who come from the city of Shelbyville and rural areas of Bedford County. The school follows the semester plan with ½ credit earned per course per semester. The daily schedule is a traditional six-period day with each class meeting a minimum of 55 minutes. The school year is 180 days. The ACT code is 432-120.
COMMUNITY: Shelbyville is located in southern middle Tennessee. With a population of approximately 16,000, there is a mix of heavy industry, retail, and service employment. Long the center of the Tennessee walking horse industry, Shelbyville is host to the annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, a ten-day event with attendance of over 100,000. Other prominent industries include pencil manufacturing, auto and truck parts, Tyson Inc., and a Wal-Mart distribution center. Shelbyville is home to the first Tennessee Technology Center and is near Motlow State Community College and Middle Tennessee State University.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation requirements for the Class of 2004 are as follows:

HONORS DIPLOMA: Students may graduate with an honors diploma upon completing 1. the core curriculum and their chosen path 2. at least a 3.0 overall academic average on a 4.0 scale 3. the competency test standards 4. a satisfactory attendance and conduct record
GRADING SYSTEM:
CLASS RANK: The top academic students will be determined at the end of the seventh semester. Students are ranked by GPA order on a 4.0 grade point scale.
Advanced Placement and Honors Courses: As incentive for the added course work and more rigorous grading, Honors courses add three points to the each six weeks average. Using the same rationale, Advanced Placement courses add five points to each six weeks average.
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:
Over the past three years, Shelbyville Central has had · one semi-finalist · three commended scholars · one finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program
