Add a Shortcut to the Links bar in Internet Explorer

Drag the webpage's icon from the Address bar directly to the Links bar. You may have to right click on the toolbar and unlock the toolbar first.

 

Tiling Windows

Tired of minimizing and maximizing windows when you are working with two documents or pages? Maximize both windows and right click on an empty part of the bottom taskbar. Select Tile Windows Vertically or Tile Windows Horizontally.

 

Alphabetizing Start Menu

Click on Start and Programs. Right click on any program. Choose Sort by Name.

 

Starting PowerPoint Directly as a Slide Show

Once the slide show is completed, click on File and Save As. In the Save As Type box, select PowerPoint Show (*.pps). Name the file and click OK. The slide show will now open to the first slide.

 

Distractions During a PowerPoint Slide Show

If you need to pause the slide show during a PowerPoint presentation, tap the b key to get a black screen. Tap it again to go back to the slide show.

 

Shortcut for Selecting Lines of Text

To select only one word, double click it.

To select one line, click three times on the line OR move your cursor to the left of the line until it becomes an arrow. Click once to select the current line of text or twice to select the current paragraph.

 

Shrinking to Fit for Printing

Tired of one or two lines a document spilling over to the next page when you print? Click on FileàPrint PreviewàShrink to Fit.

 

Go Away!

Want that annoying paperclip in Office to go away? Right click on it and choose Hide.

 

All Caps

Did you accidentally hit the Caps Lock key and typed your document all in capital letters? Select the text you want to correct. Click on FormatàChange Case. Select Sentence Case. OR Select the text you want to correct. Hold the Shift key down and tap the F3 key at the same time.

 

Adding Rows to a Table

The quickest way to add rows at the end of a table is to tap the TAB key when you are in the last row of the table. This will add a new row.

 

Inserting Symbols

Want to add the ¢, ©, or other symbol quickly? Go to View in the top toolbar. Choose ToolbarsàCustomize. Choose the Commands tab. Select Insert from the left-hand menu. Scroll down the right-hand menu to the Symbol button. It looks like a Greek Omega. Click on the Symbol button and drag it up to the Standard toolbar. When the cursor turns into an I-beam, then release the mouse button. Click on this button to get a menu of symbols.

 

Venn Diagram

To make a quick Venn Diagram to keep track of the topic your class is discussing, open a word processing or drawing program. Use the Oval tool to create two large, overlapping circles. Insert Text Boxes to label each circle. Insert additional Text Boxes within the circles to add characteristic of the two topics you are comparing and contrasting. Change the colors and style of the fonts to show similarities and differences.

Homepage Default

Want your homepage to always open up to the Bedford County Website? Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools from the Menu Bar, and choose Internet Options from the drop down menu. Click on the General tab. The first option listed is for your homepage. Type http://www.bedfordk12tn.com in the address window. Click OK at the bottom of the screen.

 

Favorites Basics

Throw out old Favorites you no longer use in Internet Explorer and organize those you want to keep. Select Organize Favorites from the IE Favorites menu. Remove Favorites by clicking on the bookmark to highlight it. Click the Delete button on the left. Choose Yes when asked to confirm. To organize your Favorites, create folders for different categories. Click the Create Folder button and type a name. Click a Favorite to add to the folder and click on the Move to Folder button. Follow the directions to move the Favorite.

 

Alphabetizing Favorites

Make it easy to find a link you have marked as a Favorite in IE. Click on Favorites in the Menu bar. Right click on any Favorite. Choose Sort by Name from the drop down menu box.

 

Search a Search

Have you ever found a document as the result of a web search, but couldn't find the term or name you needed within the document? On the Internet Explorer menu, choose Edit. Choose Find from the drop down menu that appears. Type the word or phrase you are searching for in the dialog box. IE will take you straight to that word or alert you that it is not found on that page. You can choose the direction you search on the page (Up or Down) and find the next occurrence of that word (Find Next).
