Kindergarten Registration FAQs
How old does my child have to be to start Kindergarten?
The student must be 5 years old on or before August 15.
What if my child turns five (5) after August 15th, will my child have to wait to start the next school year?
If a child will be five (5) years of age on or before Sept. 20, the parent or guardian may request, in writing to the superintendent, that the child be admitted to Kindergarten. Upon a request, the school district will administer an evaluation and examination. If the results indicate the child is sufficiently mature emotionally and academically, then the child may be enrolled in Kindergarten.
When is Kindergarten registration?
April 4, 2025, from 8:30 am-2:00 pm at each elementary school.
Where do I take my child to sign up for Kindergarten?
Registration will be held at the school your child is zoned for. Click here if you are unsure what area you are zoned for.
What documents do I need to bring to registration?
- Certified Copy Birth Certificate
- Proof of Address
- Physical and Immunization (This must be completed by August 1 to be enrolled in School)
What are some skills that my child should know by Kindergarten age?
- Know their first and last name.
- Know basic colors and shapes.
- Able to follow a structured routine.
- Able to follow simple rules from teachers.
- Recognize and name letters (lower and upper case) and numbers (1-10)
- Able to sit quietly for short periods of time.
These are only some skills your child should be able to do successfully by Kindergarten age.
If not, students will learn these things while in Kindergarten.
Will there be any type of screening on that day?
Yes, there will be testing of basic demographic knowledge, language development, cognitive skills, self-care skills, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills. The Brigance screening will be administered on April 4, 2025. If your child is not screened on April 4, there are some other opportunities for them to be screened, and the school will inform you of those opportunities. You will have a screening appointment made if your child is not screened on April 4.
Can I register my child without bringing him or her?
Yes, but we prefer the child attends registration with the parents (care givers) because the school can conduct the screener that day.
Will my Kindergartner start school on August 1, 2025?
Kindergarten students don’t start school on the first day. They will have a staggered, phase-in schedule, and parents will be informed at registration when their child will come to school during the phase-in days.
Can my Kindergartner ride the bus to school?
Yes, Kindergarten students may ride the bus. There is a transportation form you must fill out. Please let your child’s teacher know that you are interested in your child riding the bus. This is also the information you will receive during Open House. Please make sure you and your child attend the Open House. Kindergarten students may ride the bus to school during the phase-in days, but they must be picked up by a parent during these phase-in days because there is no half-day bus transportation. Parents will learn at registration when the half-day dismissal time will be.
Is there a Kindergarten Parent Meeting?
Yes, there is a Kindergarten Parent Meeting at each elementary school [DATE TO BE DECIDED BUT IT IS USUALLY LATE JULY; PLEASE STAY TUNED]. Parents are encouraged to attend to learn about Kindergarten expectations, overall school rules, and academic standards. Parents and students will meet the teacher and see the classroom.
