🥖 Exciting things are happening in the SCHS Culinary Arts program!🥖

The first-ever #ShelbyvilleCentralHighSchool and Motlow State Community College Dual-Enrollment #CulinaryArts class is officially underway — giving #students the opportunity to earn college credit and hands-on industry experience. 🎉

This week marks a major milestone for the program as #Culinary 3 students prepare to take the ServSafe Managers industry certification exam which is a Tier 3 certification recognized by the State of Tennessee for its high level of industry achievement.

While some students are gearing up for certification, others are perfecting their craft in the Culinary Breads class, which meets each Wednesday evening. 🍞 Under the direction of Chef Michael Walker, students are learning the art and science of breadmaking — from technique to texture.

👏 Please join us in cheering on these talented young chefs as they continue developing their skills and preparing for bright futures in the culinary industry!

🐣 Egg-citing Classroom Update from East Side Elementary School! 🐣

In Mrs. Shelby Summer’s classroom at #EastSideElementarySchool, #students are eagerly watching the incredible journey of life as eggs 🥚 incubate and develop. Recent candling shows the air pocket at the bottom of the eggs, while most of the egg appears dark—an exciting sign that the chicks 🐥 are growing bigger and preparing to hatch!

At this stage:

The chick is almost fully formed and takes up most of the space inside the egg 🥚.

The air pocket provides oxygen 🌿as the chick gets ready to breathe on its own.

Hatching usually happens around day 21 ⏳, and the chicks will start breaking through the shell soon!

Students are getting a front-row seat to science in action 🔬, learning firsthand how life develops inside an egg 🐣.

🍬🧪 Sugar + Yeast = Science Magic!✨🎈

Recently, students at #ShelbyvilleCentralHighSchool, guided by instructor Karra Garrett, explored the fascinating world of yeast metabolism in an exciting fermentation lab.🥼🔬

💡 Essential Question: How does sugar affect the rate of carbon dioxide production during fermentation?🎈

Yeast, tiny unicellular fungi, switch from aerobic to anaerobic respiration when oxygen runs out — producing CO₂ gas and ethanol. Just like when making bread 🍞, yeast first uses up the available oxygen in the dough, then switches to anaerobic fermentation, causing the dough (or in this case, the balloons🎈) to rise!

In this hands-on experiment, #students added different amounts of sugar to yeast mixtures and observed how quickly the balloons inflated🎈 as carbon dioxide was produced. They recorded their observations and compared results to see how sugar levels affected fermentation rates 💨.

By observing yeast in action, students gained hands-on experience with chemical reactions and saw science come alive.🎈🔬✨
