❤️Student Spotlight: Saving Lives & Making a Difference ❤️

#BedfordCountySchools is incredibly proud of Kaegan Young, a senior from #CascadeHighSchool, who turned compassion into action — and helped save lives in the process!

As part of the American Red Cross Leaders Save Lives program, Kaegan hosted a community blood drive on June 19, 2025, collecting an amazing 158 blood donations from 131 donors, including 54 first-time donors. Because of her leadership and dedication, she earned a $2,500 scholarship and a gift card — well deserved!

This blood drive was especially meaningful. Kaegan organized it in honor of her younger sister, Kaemey, who is currently battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

The scholarship was presented by representatives from the American Red Cross, including Ron Simmons, District Manager for Tennessee; Brandie Spradley, Booking Manager; and Gene Baker, Account Manager, who joined Kaegan and her parents in recognizing her extraordinary service and leadership.

We are #BedfordProud to celebrate #students who lead with heart, serve their communities and make a difference beyond the classroom. #Congratulations, Kaegan!🫶❤️

🍴🔥 Cooking Up Success! 🔥🍴

Please join us in sending a huge #congratulations to two talented #students from #CascadeHighSchool who are advancing to the top 8 in the Tennessee State Junior Chef Competition, a statewide, high school-level culinary challenge!

This first round focused on nutrition with teams creating a recipe that met strict National School Lunch Program guidelines—including under 750 calories, less than 1,000 mg of sodium, and other nutritional requirements.

🎉 Isabella Highfill and Hannah Nevills, students in Megan Sager's Culinary Arts class, impressed judges with their dish: honey bbq chicken breast on a bed of whole-grain rice, served with sweet potato fries, smashed carrots and a strawberry cup.

Next stop: the live cooking round, where the top teams will prepare their meals in front of judges! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

At approximately 10:00 p.m. last night, administrators at Shelbyville Central High School, in coordination with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department, were made aware of a tip received by law enforcement. The report indicated that a student had told a parent another student may be bringing a gun to school.

School administrators and law enforcement, including the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department and the Shelbyville Police Department, worked throughout the night to identify the student involved. A thorough search was conducted early this morning before school was in session, and no weapon was found. The threat was determined not to be valid.

Out of an abundance of caution, preventative measures were implemented this morning, including limiting entry points to one. Normal school operations resumed at 7:45 a.m., with the release of the bell to allow students to enter the building. This decision was made in cooperation with law enforcement. Students were interviewed this morning to confirm all details prior to resuming normal activities.

At no time was the school placed on lockdown. No weapon was brought to school, and no random searches were conducted.

This situation underscores the importance of our “See something. Say something.” We appreciate the student and parent who spoke up, as reporting concerns allows school officials and law enforcement to respond quickly and appropriately.

Student safety is always our number one priority. We thank our parents and community for their cooperation and support.

📈Attendance Progress Update at HMS📈

#HarrisMiddleSchool has recently implemented a new attendance initiative to address chronic absenteeism. The current chronic absenteeism rate is 16.26% 📊, reflecting an improvement from 20.02% at this time last year ➡️ a 3.76 percentage point decrease!

This progress reflects increased accountability ✅, early intervention ⏱️ and targeted supports 🎯. The improvement represents meaningful forward movement and the continued efforts of #students 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓, families 🏠 and staff 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 to prioritize daily attendance. This work aligns with #BedfordCountySchools ongoing focus on strengthening attendance practices across all schools 🏫 to ensure students are present, engaged and supported every day. 💙💛
